Donation Cost: $165.14
|
As the year 2013 closes down, we made a small donation of dog food, leashes, and more worth $165.14 to an Appalachian dog rescue. Everything helps!
Donation Cost: $165.14 Today we got up really early to head down to southern Ohio to deliver gifts. The snow fall the night before was quite bad, but if Santa can make it -- so can we! We made three stops, pictures are below of the day. Stop number one was in Portsmouth, Ohio where we dropped off new toys, gently used toys, and gently used clothing to a church from Adams county (who agreed to meet us so we didn't have to drive out in the truck in the snow too far). Stop two was in Ironton, Ohio at the Harvest for the Hungry Food Bank. There were unloaded bags and bags of gently used clothing and hygiene products! Stop three was Symmes Valley elementary school where we purchased holiday gifts for 35 children, about 3,000 new and gently used books (2,000 new, 1,000 gently used), and about 1,700 dental hygiene items. This would not have been possible if it weren't for our amazing donors. THANK YOU! Gently Used Clothing FMV: $15,000 Holiday Gifts FMV: $8,750 Toys FMV: $5,000 Books FMV: $20,000 Hygiene Supplies (same as listed from day 1): $2,180 Today we shopped till we about dropped and then we loaded the truck. Below, in the picture on the left you see high schooler Ellie Adkins, she definitely did a bit of shopping for the children she decided to adopt as well as the kids the lovely staff at Highbanks Dental decided to adopt. We are grateful for their help with our Christmas project. Below to the right you see George McNab (left) and Zach Douglas (right). While it was freezing outside, they packed up the truck just perfectly! We made them stop about half-way to take their picture!
We also have to send out a special thank you to Thea Sheffey, David Stanton, and Hillary Galbraith for helping us raid Target in record time! Today we had about 15 volunteers helping to unpack, sort, pack, and repack boxes of Christmas gifts and dental hygiene supplies like dental floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Every child we worked to provide holiday gifts for this year received a bag of hygiene supplies in addition to their gifts. We also donated approximately 2,000 pieces of dental supplies to a southern Ohio school district for the nurse to handout when they saw fit! Dental/Hygiene Supplies FMV: $2,180 Due to connections that Emily has through her job at Battelle for Kids with Tennessee and really her education-loving and dedicated coworker, Joe T. Wood, Grandma's Gifts got connected with the Clinch-Powell Education Cooperative in Tazewell, Tennessee and Lexington City Schools in Lexington, Tennessee (west Tennessee). Then George McNab, Thea Sheffey, and Emily Douglas packed up thousands of pieces of dental hygiene supplies and new books bags for Christmas gifts to be shipped to Tennessee. These goods went to ensure children have the goods they need to be healthy!
Shipping: $303.23 Hygiene Items FMV (about 6000 pieces): $6,540 New Book bags (75): $900 With the help of an Ironton native and Kentucky school Principal, Tom Collins, Grandma's Gifts was able to provide 21 turkeys to Ironton City Schools for their holiday food basket program! Tom organized the purchasing, hauling, and delivery of goods. We don't know where we'd be without him! We are also grateful to the Save-A-Lot manager for hooking us up with a great sale price!
Donation Value: $371.92 Just as the famous philanthropist and cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizen can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." At Grandma's Gifts we know this to be true... and we have proof: A group of volunteers, headed up by do-gooders Bonnie Valentino, Kathy Slaus, Orpha Robinson, Eva Hager, Vikvi Ramsey, and Linda Gillespie, contacted their friends and asked for gently used items, new items, and canned food. While they knew they'd collect a ton - we don't think they quite expected what they got! Thousands of pounds of gently used clothing, coats, and shoes; canned food for people and dogs; gorgeous handmade glass dollies; hygiene supplies; and the list goes on and on... and on. Then they decided they wanted to help Grandma's Gifts. We were moved and overwhelmed by their generosity! Just check out the photos below of what they collected and how much fun they had sorting and packing everything! Zachary Douglas attended the event to help out and lend a bit of strength. While this blog post, hugs, tears, and thank you's are not enough, we would like to thank the following people who made a donation to this holiday gift collection effort:
We love to know their are people in the world with hearts of gold like these lovely people. We are so very thankful. These goods were then donated to the Harvest for the Hungry Food Pantry (they have a clothing bank) and a church in Adams County Ohio. Pictures of the delivery of these goods can be seen in the 'Day 3: Delivery' post! Donation FMV: $11,000 |
