Today, Grandma's Gifts Founder and Executive Director, Emily Douglas, spoke at the Miami University Women in Leadership Conference as part of a moderated panel. The symposium was the official launch of a new program M.I.A.M.I. Women -- Miami Initiative for Advancing, Mentoring, and Investing in Women. The conference was specifically built around the theme “Making our Mark” and is intended to inspire and empower women to leave their mark on the world through leadership and giving back.
Emily was honored to have been invited and attend the conference. More information on the event can be found on the Miami University website. Please help! Vote for Frazier, a Wag'N Wheels Appalachian rescue, to win the Brew 105.7 Mutt Madness competition! If he wins, his dad and mom (George McNab and Grandma's Gifts founder Emily Douglas) will use the gift cards from Meijer for $600 to buy supplies for Appalachian dog rescues and pounds! Voting ends today 3/30 at midnight -- you can vote once per day if you voted yesterday! These dogs were taken to the vet by a volunteer from the Hocking County Dog Shelter in Logan, Ohio. The three adult dogs are below, the two puppies are not pictured. They soon will hopefully be going to a new forever home, healthy.
We are thankful for Hocking County Dog Shelter volunteer, Amy Beougher for taking these dogs to the vet and using her own money to help them. We are also grateful for Don Kiger, Hocking County Dog Warden, for allowing volunteers to make a difference at the pound and for loving those who have no ability to speak for themselves. We are happy to report that the Hocking County Dog Pound is able to get 98% of the animals in, placed. Donation Value: $100 Deuce is a pretty cool guy - living with Teresa Daulong and Family in Houston, Texas. While he will always have his Appalachian roots, he is really enjoying his new family. Recently, Grandma's Gifts founder Emily visitied Texas and got to see him -- do you think he remembered her? We think so. He even gave her a smooch to say thanks for saving my life and finding me such a great home!
February 16, 2014 - Dog Transport from Kentucky to Ohio Check out these five pups... while they look like chocolate labs, they're really eight week old Mastiff/ Great Dane mixes!
They're just too cute. Just. Too cute. Luna's story is one that should make everyone's heart sing. While she was found tied to a tree, weighing about 50lbs, this girl has now made a full recovery. Check out her picture transformation below - she went from frail and mistreated to healthy and obviously very happy. We are blessed to have found her a forever home that already had a Great Dane. This month we lent a hand to help some dogs get to the vet in southern Ohio. We paid $414.54 in vet bills... we 're just glad everyone is healthy!
Vet Bills Paid: $414.54 As the year 2013 closes down, we made a small donation of dog food, leashes, and more worth $165.14 to an Appalachian dog rescue. Everything helps!
Donation Cost: $165.14 Today we got up really early to head down to southern Ohio to deliver gifts. The snow fall the night before was quite bad, but if Santa can make it -- so can we! We made three stops, pictures are below of the day. Stop number one was in Portsmouth, Ohio where we dropped off new toys, gently used toys, and gently used clothing to a church from Adams county (who agreed to meet us so we didn't have to drive out in the truck in the snow too far). Stop two was in Ironton, Ohio at the Harvest for the Hungry Food Bank. There were unloaded bags and bags of gently used clothing and hygiene products! Stop three was Symmes Valley elementary school where we purchased holiday gifts for 35 children, about 3,000 new and gently used books (2,000 new, 1,000 gently used), and about 1,700 dental hygiene items. This would not have been possible if it weren't for our amazing donors. THANK YOU! Gently Used Clothing FMV: $15,000 Holiday Gifts FMV: $8,750 Toys FMV: $5,000 Books FMV: $20,000 Hygiene Supplies (same as listed from day 1): $2,180 Today we shopped till we about dropped and then we loaded the truck. Below, in the picture on the left you see high schooler Ellie Adkins, she definitely did a bit of shopping for the children she decided to adopt as well as the kids the lovely staff at Highbanks Dental decided to adopt. We are grateful for their help with our Christmas project. Below to the right you see George McNab (left) and Zach Douglas (right). While it was freezing outside, they packed up the truck just perfectly! We made them stop about half-way to take their picture!
We also have to send out a special thank you to Thea Sheffey, David Stanton, and Hillary Galbraith for helping us raid Target in record time! Today we had about 15 volunteers helping to unpack, sort, pack, and repack boxes of Christmas gifts and dental hygiene supplies like dental floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Every child we worked to provide holiday gifts for this year received a bag of hygiene supplies in addition to their gifts. We also donated approximately 2,000 pieces of dental supplies to a southern Ohio school district for the nurse to handout when they saw fit! Dental/Hygiene Supplies FMV: $2,180 Due to connections that Emily has through her job at Battelle for Kids with Tennessee and really her education-loving and dedicated coworker, Joe T. Wood, Grandma's Gifts got connected with the Clinch-Powell Education Cooperative in Tazewell, Tennessee and Lexington City Schools in Lexington, Tennessee (west Tennessee). Then George McNab, Thea Sheffey, and Emily Douglas packed up thousands of pieces of dental hygiene supplies and new books bags for Christmas gifts to be shipped to Tennessee. These goods went to ensure children have the goods they need to be healthy!
Shipping: $303.23 Hygiene Items FMV (about 6000 pieces): $6,540 New Book bags (75): $900 With the help of an Ironton native and Kentucky school Principal, Tom Collins, Grandma's Gifts was able to provide 21 turkeys to Ironton City Schools for their holiday food basket program! Tom organized the purchasing, hauling, and delivery of goods. We don't know where we'd be without him! We are also grateful to the Save-A-Lot manager for hooking us up with a great sale price!
Donation Value: $371.92 Just as the famous philanthropist and cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizen can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." At Grandma's Gifts we know this to be true... and we have proof: A group of volunteers, headed up by do-gooders Bonnie Valentino, Kathy Slaus, Orpha Robinson, Eva Hager, Vikvi Ramsey, and Linda Gillespie, contacted their friends and asked for gently used items, new items, and canned food. While they knew they'd collect a ton - we don't think they quite expected what they got! Thousands of pounds of gently used clothing, coats, and shoes; canned food for people and dogs; gorgeous handmade glass dollies; hygiene supplies; and the list goes on and on... and on. Then they decided they wanted to help Grandma's Gifts. We were moved and overwhelmed by their generosity! Just check out the photos below of what they collected and how much fun they had sorting and packing everything! Zachary Douglas attended the event to help out and lend a bit of strength. While this blog post, hugs, tears, and thank you's are not enough, we would like to thank the following people who made a donation to this holiday gift collection effort:
We love to know their are people in the world with hearts of gold like these lovely people. We are so very thankful. These goods were then donated to the Harvest for the Hungry Food Pantry (they have a clothing bank) and a church in Adams County Ohio. Pictures of the delivery of these goods can be seen in the 'Day 3: Delivery' post! Donation FMV: $11,000 Today we delivered a VERY large donation of canned food, fresh apples, and frozen turkeys to the Harvest for the Hungry Food Pantry in Ironton, Ohio. We donated more than 1000 canned foods, 700lbs of fresh apples, and more than 40 frozen turkeys! Check out the photos and captions below for a play-by-play of the day! Canned Food Donation: $1,000 Frozen Turkeys: $499.85 Apples from Lynds: $550
On November 1, 2013, Grandma's Gifts was able to take a southern Ohio school's second graders to the Newport Aquarium in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was all due to our great donors. Check out this picture of the kids in the large aquarium. The divers were feeding the fish! What started as a joke to decorate my parents home for Halloween has turned into... quite the neighborhood event. The front yard Green Meadows Cemetery and research lab turned Zombie Ground Zero (complete with animations and 90% hand-built props) are all the rage come October 31st! So, this year we decided to have a Halloween party and invite 50 of our friends!
What were they to bring to the spooktacular event? Donations of canned food for Grandma's Gifts! Result: A costume contest. A great time... and we ended up with $200 in donations and about 100 canned goods. The canned food is to be donated for Thanksgiving and the cash will be used to purchase more food! It doesn't get any better than that... for the un-dead in these parts... mwahahahahaaa! Luna was placed on October 12, 2013. She was found tied to a tree... and when you see the images, you can tell she went days without food. When she was found, she had no food or water or even a water bowl. She was taken from her owner and they were written a ticket. We pulled her from the pound and then took her to the vet. More than $500 later and numerous shots and medications, she went home with volunteers to stay for a few days. After pounds and pounds of rice, turkey, chicken, dog treats, and more, every other hour - throughout the night, she started to act and feel like a real dog again. Though friends of friends, we were able to locate a new forever home. She now lives outside Cleveland, Ohio. Check the news page on the Wag'N Wheels site for more photos. Continue to watch this page for updates on her new life!
